Long Tail Keywords Deliver The Traffic

Increasing sales or ad revenue is often one of the biggest concerns of a website owner. There are all sorts of ways to make this happen for virtually any website. One relatively unconventional, but logical way to do this is by tapping into the power of long tail keywords.

Chris Anderson's article in Wired Magazine about the benefits of tapping into niche markets over selling popular products gave birth to the idea for long tail keywords. Anderson proposed that it makes more sense to operate in a market with a targeted niche and less competition than to compete on the popular front where competition is high. Anderson's theory has been put to work on the Internet rather effectively.

Anyone who uses Internet search engines very likely already understands what long tail keywords are. These are nothing more than the phrases that people type into search engines to find sites that are more targeted to their needs. Rather than searching for something general, the searcher enters a longer 3 or more word keyword phrase into the search engine.

Instead of landing on a site with cursory information about a topic, a user that inputs a long tail phrase is more likely to find sites that fit the specific need. For example, searching for "mortgage rates in california" is more specific than "mortgage rates". These particular terms generally don't have the competition for ranking that other search terms might. This means it should be easier for a site owner to obtain traffic.

The perks of using long tail keywords in addition to or instead of more popular search words are many. The reality is that long tail keywords can drive a whole lot more traffic to a website over the long haul than going for more popular keywords. The advantages of this strategy include giving a website the potential to rank higher for its terms, increasing traffic slowly but surely and even increasing revenue and sales conversions. Simply said, long tail keywords work by tapping into a lot of smaller streams of traffic rather than trying to compete where there is much competition.

Putting the long tail keyword strategy to work on a website requires finding the right keyword phrases to use. There are several easy ways to do this.

There are tracking programs that can be used to help website owners and managers figure out the right long tail keywords to use for their sites. One popular tool is HitTail.com. The function of this program is to analyze a particular site and make suggestions on the phrases that would work best for it. It can be useful, but they don't always make the best, most detailed suggestions. With this in mind, some sites are optimized by using phrases typed in by visitors themselves. It is best to use a keyword research tool like Ad Word Analyzer to uncover these keywords.

Another way to pick the right keywords is to look at the competition and see the keywords they currently use on their web pages. Then you should start adding content to the site in a natural way by creating useful, relevant articles that use your targeted long tail keywords.

Increasing traffic on a long-term and steady basis takes work. It's not necessarily a snap, but it is ceratinly worth the extra effort. Long tail keywords can have a huge impact on the profits for any website, so they should definitely not be overlooked.
